OW+ Controller Box Rattle - Ferrite Ring Fix

  • Recently I noticed a rattle coming from under the foot sensor. After a little research, I discovered that quite a few other users experienced the same noise, and they concluded that it was ferrite ring on the LED wiring that is not well supported and bouncing around. A few riders noticed the front LED not working and the heavy ferrite ring had broke the wires.
I wanted to fix this issue before it damaged any wires like others have experienced. I didn't see any pictures of this operation before I started, so I wanted to provide a how-to for the next DIY-er. The pictures should explain what was done, and I have included a few thoughts below.

    • Getting access to inside of the controller box was harder than I thought it would be
    • The adhesive sealing tape requires more force to open than I often felt should be applied
    • Complete separation of the top and bottom is not necessary, and only opening up one half to insert the foam is sufficient
    • The quality of construction is overall impressive
    • Leftover closed cell package foam sheets worked great for cutting to fit and should be an excellent vibration insulator the way it is sandwiched between two sheets
    • Warranty is voided, but I didn’t have to ship it back to FM
    • No extra screws upon reassembly
    • It turned on and I took it for a float (quite a sigh of relief after the exploratory fix)
    • No rattles!!!

  • Geeez no wonder it sounds like a rock bouncing around inside my board... why the heck wouldn't ya secure that somehow FM????

  • Nicely done and well-documented. I didn't manage to open the box completely (rear with connectors was very stubborn) had to sneak a piece of foam in. Still worked though.

I wish I would have realized that while I was trying to separate the two halves. My goal was to open the box, and in doing that I forgot the reason I was opening the box. This task would have gone much quicker, and less likely to damage the controller box internals, if I had just propped up the front side and slide the two pieces of foam in there. At least the community gets some good photos out of it.

  • Update: I've put quite a few miles/charges on the board, and this fix definitely solved the rattling issues. The sound is easy to dismiss with all the background noise while riding, but it was very evident when I would capture a video. The rattle is now absent from background noise in videos.

  • Thanks for sharing!

  • My board is in service for front white light flicker. Should i link them to this howto? 😆

Might be too late for you know now, but I didn't want to pay to ship my board to FM when the problem was already identified and easily fixed by others.

It is such a trivial fix, that ends up costing the owner and FM money. It's a shame you can't work on these items without voiding the warranty, but I do understand why FM does it. Some people (including some of this forum's members) shouldn't even own a screw driver, much less work on anything of importance.

  • Cool, now I can open my brand new XR, and fix what should have been done properly the first time around.

Insane they had this issue with the plus, and just kept it going right into the XR builds. Almost like they make money on warranty returns, or something insane like that.

You've got to be kidding me?!?!
It is clearly a warranty issue that FM knows about. The fixes under warranty are documented on this forum and FB groups. Face Palm that they didn't change the design to save themselves some money down the road with shipping and man power for the repairs.
If I were you, with the known issues that the brand new XRs seem to be having, I wouldn't open up the controller box myself. I would send it in for warranty repair so that they don't ding you for one of the other issues.

  • @gibby Are you saying you have the ferrite knock already? Or are you just mentioning it as preventative maintenance? Has anyone opened their XR for science yet?

  • I had the ferrite bead rattle the second my new XR touched the kitchen floor.
I won't be opening it, I will be sending it back to FM to solve what should have been done correctly the first time around.

INSANE, that they didn't fix this on the XR, INSANE!

  • They basically say it's normal. I'm sending my plus in with a bad bearing. Told them I also wanted rattle fixed before i have led issues. Its annoying and it didnt do it when it was new.
