Side handle on Onewheel
-
I got the idea for installing a handle on the side of the Onewheel from @badcheese (http://bit.ly/1oCvgFk) and @cr4p had the idea to use a kite boarding grab handle, which seemed perfect... so I ordered this one: http://bit.ly/23h102w
I had hoped to do a cleaner install of this without all the tape by using 4 rivets. Unfortunately, I know virtually nothing about rivet tools (or tools in general), so I always have to research and learn as I go.
Here are my current fears on this mod, and I was hoping those of you who are handier than me could help out:
-
Is this possible? If not, ignore 2-6.
-
There's definitely some important wiring in both sides of the frame. Do you think it's possible for me to drill into it and avoid the wiring? If so, any tips for this? I don't think removing the wheel is an option.
-
Should I use aluminum or stainless steel rivets, and what size would be best?
-
Would I need rivet washers?
-
Will rivets be able to go through the handle AND the OW frame?
-
WILL IT HOLD??? I'm hoping 4 rivets should be strong enough, if I can find ones that go through it.
-
-
I like the idea of course, it's a must have.. I haven't put much thought into it but I want to make something as well..
Rivets will most likely loosen over time because the frame is aluminum and handle is plastic.. Small screws with lock nuts would be my opinion and washers. You can get drill bit collars to set depth.. Or use a drill press if available..
-
@njcustom Aww, man, that handle is plastic?? I couldn't find any specs on the page, and I was thinking it was painted aluminum. I'll wait until it arrives to see how tough it is, but I would think I'd need a metal handle.
The main problem (well, ONE of the main problems) is that there's very very little space to work with in that frame, and it's really tough to get a tool in there to hold a nut in place. But I think it's possible... and it's probably the best idea. A little Loctite on the nut, too, probably?
No drill press yet... but thanks for the drill bit collars tip!
-
@thegreck it looks plastic but i could be wrong.. Buy lock nuts and you won't need loctight..

I like where this is going !

I'm wondering if you could just use the glue or sticker GoPro uses on there gear and just stick it on? I think its 3M but I'm not sure.
-
Maybe that Drill the board will cancel the warranty...? Be carefull dudes!

Yeah, I'm now considering doing the same exact method @badcheese did, just to avoid voiding the warranty or potentially ruining the board.

I'm with you... There's gotta be a way to do this where I don't have to drill the board. Thinking about it still.

I had an idea of how to go about this but never got to it. Just use the bolts that are already present in the frame, on either side of the center axel.
-
I like that idea. I think you would need to use longer bolts, because the heads would be prevented from fitting into their counterbores. You'd need to make sure the handle was big enough that your knuckles wouldn't hit the bolt heads, which would have to be inside the handle.

Here are a few more ideas:
Soft handle, no tools needed (Velcro):

http://www.mooreparts.com/curved-grab-handle/The last two I would attach to a thick aluminum plate with fasteners counterbored from the back. That plate would be fastened to the OW with two
slightly longer replacements for the bolts on either side of the axle. The replacements could be counterbored Allen bolts like the originals, or low-profile hex head bolts (for knuckle clearance).

Some great finds, @badcheese !
I did a search for the rollbar grab handle and found this one... I think I like it even more:

@thegreck I like that one!!
-
Yeah, I like that one too! I like having a rigid handle. More control when I'm moving it around.
I was mostly searching for aluminum to keep the weight down, but I bet the tubular steel doesn't add much weight. I'm also wondering if it would stay in place on the flat side rail, since it looks like it's made to strap to a wide round pipe (1.5 - 2 inch diameter... plus padding?).

With that removable grab handle posted by @thegreck, I'm curious to see if it can rotate downward/upward so it's clear of any obstacles or damage. I'd imagine a bolted-on metal device would get more scratched up than the rails, which won't feel too good on the hands.
