Onewheel day/weekend hire

  • I have thought about doing this type of rental at the jersey shore but I see too many liabilities/issues with people just taking them out on the streets. For one too high of a learning curve for a lot of people to really get a chance to enjoy it, which in turn can make it dangerous on the street. second would be that the battery life does kind of suck for this type of application. A potential customer may be turned off by the fact that they have to spend half of their rental charging the board. I have a few other ideas that I have been throwing around that would be a workaround for those issues but I have to keep them to myself for the time being.

  • @ahxe45

    Agree about the liability.
But battery wouldn't be an issue I don't think.
In fact, the fast charging may even be helpful.

I agree with @thegreck about the $25 per day.
Anything more, people would consider rental fee to price of OW ratio.
Like $15 a day for a bicycle is smart considering you could pick up a used bike from CL for 50 bucks or so.

Liability insurance and deposit on OW and you have a winner idea.

  • $75 a day seems more reasonable to me, if you want to profit at all.

The price from for 4 hours is about $86, in Croatia. They are renting for periods as short as 15 minutes for $11.50.

It's $60 to rent a Boosted board in SF for eight hours.

You are not going to get tons of business.

  • So there are a number of things to consider. I'd start by trying to do a locker setup at an airport, and charge in the $30-40 range for the first day and a discount for each additional day, and include the charger. More or less a brandable app that would combine the controls of the OneWheel and handle the transaction with the rental company. This takes away the biggest cost in staffing the location, and offers up the ability for OneWheel owners to snag one without bringing a checked bag. By doing it at the airport, someone could land, and on the way to their hotel shuttle/metro/?? they could grab their OneWheel that would be their mode around town.

The follow on would be the location based rental, in a tourist / flat beachy area where you'd have a staffed kiosk with a learning ground to 'try' a OneWheel for $5-10 and apply that to a rental. $30 for 4 hours is about as high as I would go, and I'd do a family style, multiple rentals on a single transaction discount, so a couple could cruise without spending $100. Remember, the cost for a Zipcar is less than $100 for a day, and that includes insurance and gas.

The more I think about it, the more I believe that a rental model that's tied to the app on the phone, where someone could extend their rental time, would be key. As a security feature, I'd build it so the app pairs with the OneWheel and if it goes offline for an extended amount of time, I'd want it to check in. In a perfect world I'd team up with Lyft/etc to provide a 'return to home' for those renters that got a little ambitious with their OneWheel adventures. Tie in social media tagging & such to offer extra time or a loyalty program.

  • I'm renting one through here when I visit Vail, CO this summer.

    $35 a day :)

Might wanna recheck that.. Says $75 per day.. $125 per 24 hours.. kinda pricey IMO.

  • I would pay 50 dollars a day in a heartbeat. Recently I was in Hawaii and I would have paid as much as 100 a day to rent a OneWheel.

  • 25$ a day plus mileage charge..... Just sayin.

  • @GlueBreath Thank u! I was told $35 over the phone a few weeks ago. At that point there was no dollar amount listed on the site. Appears they have hiked that price up A LOT! I just sent an email to confirm.

  • @jimmers75 I know this is a little old, but we actually do this very thing in the USA. The big difference is that we ship the boards as rentals anywhere in the US. You don't have to go pick it up and you can have it for more than a weekend. We allow you keep the board for 3 days for $169 or a full week for $239. We also cover shipping both ways.
