The Onewheel Saved My Life!!!
-
So, my biggest Onewheel fear happened to me: I got hit by a car Thursday night.
I was leaving work, headed for the train station, and as I was crossing the street (I had a walk signal) a car coming in the opposite direction took a left turn and accelerated directly into me. He later told the police (through tears, as I hear it) that the sun was in his eyes.
I smashed his windshield with my head, then he hit the brakes and I rolled off the hood and landed on the street like a rag doll, then laid there in pain while I waited for the ambulance.
I thought for sure I was seriously injured. My arm hurt like an mf and I could see blood pouring out of it. My face felt like mush.
But amazingly enough, my injuries were much less severe than they could've been. I did get banged up quite a bit: a lot of scrapes and bruises, and some super gnarly gashes on my arms that required around 50 sutures (photos available on the Onewheel Crash FB group for people who like gore) that are keeping me on painkillers for a few days. But there were no fractures, no spinal injuries, no broken teeth (and my face is fine aside from a fat, split lip), and no concussion or brain trauma.
My thinking is this: According to the EMTs on the scene, if I hadn't been wearing a helmet (which luckily I was, despite the fact that it's just 3-blocks from my work to the train station), I definitely wouldn't have survived the accident. And if I had been WALKING to the train station rather than riding my Onewheel, that asshole STILL would've hit me, but then I wouldn't have been wearing a helmet.
So like I said in the title, THE ONEWHEEL SAVED MY LIFE!!!

@thegreck Wow! Glad you are OK. Get well soon. Thanks for sharing your story.
-
wow.. glad you made it. makes one reflect how crazy that even a pedestrian kinda need protective gear. glad you were wearing it.
Memo to self, upgrade the bicycle helmet for a proper board helmet.
-
@thegreck get well soon man. :(
-
holy shit - get well soon @thegreck
-
@dansker I felt like full armor would've been helpful here. I posted photos of what happened to my arm on the Onewheel Crash FB group, and it's pretty bad.
-
@thegreck really glad to hear you are ok. healing thoughts and well wishes.
-
Pick of the damage to Gregs @thegreck OneWheel. Held up pretty well... poor handle. I guess Greg will have to make himself another one ;-)
-
Looks like the handle spared good old Onewheel some damage.
Good work on that handle.
-
@michaelw I'm going to fix up that bracket and put a new grip and Velcro on it! That handle will live on, just like I did!
-
I was told by police that it wasn't Gregs helmet that saved him but the amount of hair on his chest. Those of you shaving your body hair let this be a cautionary tale. Glad your ok @thegreck!

It provided padding and allowed me to slide easily across the hood of the VW Bug that hit me.
-
@thegreck can't wait to see you back on your wheel ! HEAL UP MAN !
-
@sonny123 LMAO!
-
@thegreck hey bro, hope you're recovering nicely and feeling better! Even though I've known about your accident for a couple days, seeing the photo of you laid up in the hospital bed with all the bandages and the bruised lip, it really hit home.
-
I'm glad you're ok Greck
-
@thegreck Oh no! I'm sorry to hear about your accident. Glad you're mostly okay. Helmets FTW!
