Hoosier Treaded Tire & Rubbing (w/ solution)
-
@gwinntanamo are you happy with the wear pattern
-
@gwinntanamo what about power sliding or breaking loose during a quick kick turn. It's become my favorite motion...de-wieghting the wheel during a slashed healside carve and feeling the earth shred under wheelspin. Would the treaded/rounded tire inhibit this? Or just change it a bit?
-
What about pumping the original Vega tire up to 40 PSI? Would that increase the mileage, or ride quality?
-
How's it compare on bumpy off-road terrain? I ride a lot of trails with gnarly tree roots etc, and really appreciate a 15 psi Vega tire for soaking up the bumps a bit.
-
@wheelcity Increased range - yes. Can't speak to the ride quality, I've never tried it. I suspect it'd be tough to turn smoothly.
-
@desperado It's a different ride, but still fun. My legs can absorb bumps way easier than I expected.
-
@ashewheeler yup, no issues. I'll probably rotate the tire in another 100 miles or so just to make sure I'm wearing it evenly.
-
@ashewheeler no idea. My guess is it is not as easy to slip as the slick. I mean, smaller contact patch = more load per sq inch = harder to slip.
-
@gwinntanamo my biggest concern about such a high PSI is not how well the board performs but rather how much it will beat up my knees. I presume that with a rounded tire profile the smaller contact area requires higher PSI to match the 'squishiness' (for lack of a better word) of the Vega, but I wouldn't have expected as much as 45 PSI.
-
So why is it that both tires claim the same diameter of 11.0"? Is it simply that a wider tire at the same PSI will balloon the center of the tire further than the narrow one?
-
@gwinntanamo
I'm at about 100 miles now and the flatness of the Vega tire is starting to cramp my style, exactly how you describe. There's this sudden transition between gentle flat carving and crazy on-edge carving because the wheel is a cylinder. The rounded tire sounds like exactly what I need for more maneuverability. Thanks!
-
@snwbrdwndsrf exactly - it balloons a little more.
-
@desperado Yup, exactly why I changed tires - you're going to love it!
-
@snwbrdwndsrf I think you underestimate how much work your knees are doing to accommodate the trampolining of the Vega @ 20 PSI - It's a lot. Ever ski / snowboard? We don't have cushioning or shocks on the slope - your legs absorb a ton of chop & bumps. Riding on a harder tire is similar. I think it's actually better for choppy road than the lower pressure setups. I don't have enough experience off-road with the lower pressure tires to say one is better than the other, but I can imagine benefits of a lower PSI off-road (but my gut still says higher pressure would be better).
-
@wheelcity OK, I tried the OW+ with a Vega slick @ 45 PSI
If you lived at the end of a runway and worked at the other end, it'd probably be a manageable commute. Otherwise, totally unrideable.
-
@gwinntanamo: Thanks a lot for sharing this experience!
I am also one, who can´t imagine going back to the vega. I have a Hoosier on my OW original since a long time and I replaced the vega with a hossier on my OW+ after the first 30 miles, because I just hated beeing without it.
So I really appreciate this information about a hossier that can be inflated more to give even a better rounded shape and more range without any need to remove some material.
may I ask you to upload an image, where I can see the distance between the tire and the footpads on both sides with your solution?
thanks a lot!

@gwinntanamo After approx 900 miles, it was time to change my Vega to the Hoosier. I now have about 150 miles on the Hoosier and I love it! However, I got the 6.5" version and still haven't been able to get the pressure about 15 psi. What I need to decide is whether I should shave down the tire I have so I can get the pressure up or if I should just go ahead and buy another 5.5" Hoosier. I am starting to get frustrated with the poor range etc.
-
@goodblake-eskate Not really a big deal to sand down the battery module flange. I'm at 19 psi with no rubbing although I prefer 15psi for dirt. Lay a piece of course sandpaper flat on the tire and rotate back and forth until you can air it up more. Sand and repeat :-)
-
@goodblake-eskate Frankly, I'd just order the 5.5" tire. It's a $1,500 machine - spending another $70 to make it amazing is worth it. I don't think you'll be able to sand enough off to get the 6.5" tire above 20 PSI.

@cr4p Here are a bunch of pics of various tires & pressures in the OW+ https://imgur.com/a/vWnxh
You'll see close-ups of the clearance of the 5.5" hoosier @ 45 PSI.
