Portable on-the-go charging of battery question
-
Apologies if this was answered in other threads...
I did the portable battery on the go from the awesome documentation at http://onewheel.wiki/Charging_on-the-go - I did a different angle, where I used the existing 58V charger cable and cut it then replaced with XT60 connectors. I also purchased the wiki recommended 36V battery from ebay w/ the 18650 cells and BMS (~35$). And I finally got the solar charge convertor from Amazon.Battery to OW is working fine, I'm now trying to figure out how to charge the 36V battery. Is it possible to use the AC->DC convertor that came with the OW? I know it's higher (58V) but if I just make a XT60 splitter I could plug it into the battery. This should be OK? I wanted to ask since this is a bit out of my realm and rather not burn our house down in the name of OW.

No you can't use the OW charger.
Buy a charger on ebay for the 36V battery.

@sonny123 thank you, will do.

You can charge the 36v lion battery with the same solar charger you use to charge the OW battery. Just need to make a preset to charge 42V and around 1-3 amps. You can use an old laptop power supply, PC power supply or any DC power supply that can supply 12-30VDC @ >5A.
On the solar charge controller set the input to the specs of your source and the output voltage to 42V and amps to as much as your power supply can handle under 3 amps(just playing it safe-if you know your source and battery can handle more, you may be able to charge faster). I set mine to 42V/1.5A.
FYI 42V is the charged voltage of a 36v lion pack.

didn't read all the posts but what I am going to do is use the solar charger to charge my 36v batteries with the one wheel charger plugged into the solar panel side. so 58.4V and 3.5A in but th3 output can be set to whatever you want. I'm going to use 42V and 2A.

@dr-trill forgot the splar charger doesn't step down. but I knew I figured this out and I forgot that you need two 36V batteries to make this work and you wite them in series for charging and you can set the solar charger to around 84V and 1A

@wr420 I should of read this before trying to purchase another charger, totally makes sense.
I got the https://hobbyking.com/en_us/accuell-s60-ac-charger-us-plug.html?___store=en_us based off the wiki recommend (and props for putting that together, whoever it was) - I had no luck at all with it. Plugged it in to battery and smoke came out, it was a mess. Anyone know what settings actually work?

You should by the 36v 4.4 off eBay and the ebike lunar cycle charger. Easy..make sure your charging outside and or in an amo crate or something.. 😀

@wr420 thanks again, worked like a charm - I was able to get this all working with,
- solar charger controller ($38) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HCL7LEW
- LiIo 36V battery ($45) http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-SAMSUNG-18650-36V-4-4AH-BATTERY-EBIKE-VAPE-POWERWALL-BATTERIES-20-CELLS-BMS-/201895735309?epid=1621923126&hash=item2f01ec700d:g:Mh8AAOSwSypY9Y7d
For charging the battery I used an old laptop power cable and have the solar charger outputting 42V/1.5A. For charging the OW+ it's 58V/3.5A
It does take converting everything to XT60 plugs (you could use bare wire in some places but, eh, XT60 is alright). That means soldering + having the XT60 plugs (~5$).

Do you think this
is ok ?
-
You can also charge the Onewheel at higher amps, I usually charge at 5..ðŸ¤
-
What version do you have? I have my MPT set to 4.5A, but the OW+ will only draw 3.5A at 58.5V.

@ianjohnson
The setting for Current on the controller is the maximum it will allow to be used. It's a useful setting if you need to limit the current for charging batteries with no built-in limiter. However, the onewheel does have a built-in limit at 3.5 A at 58.5V. That's based on the optimal and safe charge current for those batteries.

It the same one, just increase the amp setting. The 36v batteries don't have enough mah/volts to charge at 5amps from zero to full. I was planning to run 2 in parallel.
I only have a pic of me trying at 4amps, but I have mine at 5 amps now..
-
@sonny123 what battery are you using for 6amp charging?
My 36v 4.4 can't seem to keep up the amps. I thought it was the Onewheel but I think it's once my batt voltage falls the amps drop off..

I use a different dc dc booster. 1200w from Amazon
