First Major Wipeout on Pavement
-
Beautiful sunny day, doing 18-20 mph with 700 miles on the board - went airborne, busted lip, swollen hit side of face, road rash on hip . . . it was fucking great.
My last thought as I watched the pavement approach was, 'I regret nothing.'.
My board charge was below 40%. I was getting surge, so I knew I was over driving it, but decided to keep pushing.
I could feel my mini fangs roll when the nose dropped-out, but still got launched before I could try for a save or get a foot down, so I'm not sure how it grabbed.
The fangs have saved me many times in the past at lower speeds, so no complaints there.
I had on a full face mountain bike helmet, inexpensive motorcycle elbow/forearm knee/shinguards, wrist guards, and a deltoid pad on my leading shoulder.
Everything got ground-up on the pavement, so it looks cool now, not shiny and new.
I got right up and kept riding. To be honest, it hurt worse in the past wiping out on a grass softball field with no pads like when I first started-out.
At 54, being geeked-out with pads worked, and I can't wait to get back out today.

cripes, that's quite a story. O_O
-
The wife said to me, 'Maybe this isn't something you should be doing.' I said,'I'm calling a divorce lawyer.'.
-
@Kielanders -- I stuff an old Triple 8 knee pad in my pants for hip protection. With that, a home-adapted shoulder pad, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, and a skate helmet I did NOT even have a bruise when I hit pavement in April -- at a slower speed than yours, though.
-
Way ahead of you there, Champ.
I'm going to get one of these for my hips:
;o)
-
@Kielanders -- Strut that Onewheel in style!
-
Need photos of that protective gear!!!
-
The last photo of the pad is cut to size and shoved into the shoulder support wrap. It's not a perfect solution at this point, but it works as long as you keep the pad positioned correctly.
-
@Kielanders - when it's time to replace the shoulder piece, you could do something like this.
-
-
@Kielanders I trimmed the zipties on the one I wear daily. I just left them on there for that pic because it looked dangerous.
-
Oh, shit, I thought those were NAILS - that you went all MadMax!
lol.
God my eyes are so bad now, zips are a great idea, thank you for solving a huge problem!
:o)
-
@Kielanders Yep, totally looks like nails/spikes/Mad Max, so I left them intact on one set, figured it could be fun for a War Boy costume sometime. But they're just zipties, so soft/no danger.
-
Perfect solution, thank you!

i thought they were spikes/nails, too, but my first thought was Rollerball, so that just tells you my age, i guess, lol -- Mad Max came later!
-
great share I thought it might be a bad scary review not about smiling in the face of tarmac lol
-
I too pushed my XR faster than it should (22.7) and ignored the feedback. 7 staples in forehead (no helmet) and broken elbow. I was at 500 miles. Now at 1100+ and had the same smile as the ground approached!
I never ride without a brain bucket now.!
I’d post the pics but can’t figure out how.
-
Fangs won’t save you from a high speed nose dive. I flew off at 21.2 mph last summer on my Plus and don’t want to experience that again.
My board has 700+ miles on it now and I’ve noticed more surging and weird split second cutting out. I’ve ordered a two-X kit and it sounds like that’ll help out a lot with what I’m experiencing.

I ride almost every day in Hood River, OR. and I see (maybe) one out of four O/W riders wearing any safety equipment at all. I've even seen a few guys riding with a bottle of beer in their hand (no open bottle law in Hood River). Amazing.
