      Johnny Appleseed mod: Handy, this stock pot served as a fender for a rainy ride, testing the feel of a low rider. No fender fit the higher tire profile, so this was the 'cheap mod' I came up with to stay relatively dry. It really worked great, held on by a ratchet strap. IMG_2121.JPG

      Not the prettiest, but functional. For cold weather riding I wrapped the tail in closed cell foam especially to keep the icy snow-slush from building up on the underside and chilling the battery. Then I had a problem with slippery soles on the smooth plastic -- especially in mounting with the steeper angle of the lift kit. So, my cheap solution was to ratchet strap a piece of floor-sanding paper on top of the foam -- worked great!
      (Edit: After riding with this a few days I made an important change -- the center straight stretch of ratchet strap lacked the tension to hold the makeshift grip tape for the long term, so I started wrapping a replacement piece of grip all the way over the corners -- and the strap now holds it securely in place.)

    • RE: Start @ 60 - What could possibly happen??

      One of the more life-seasoned of this bunch here. Because of falls I gear up. Everyday or nearly so I am out Onewheeling for miles. Pretty much everything shared here and in other groups I have read and dare say even studied. At my own pace I have learned, reflected, and developed as a rider. One of the local riders points to me and says, "See, anybody can do it!"

    • Watching Action on the Leaderboards

      Out Onewheeling this week a T-shirt on a young man struck my fancy. It read, "If you can read this... Why not try a book?" So, here is a book to read -- Some of the fun of watching the ups and downs on the Leaderboards:

      This week on an Original Onewheel FranKtheTank DIY passed by the absent mekekgul of Spain with 13674 miles (22006km) as of today to the long static mileage of the former leader of 13641 miles (21953km). FranKtheTank DIY is also the number two ranked on the V1 Daystreak with 1471 miles in 98 days -- over 15 miles per day.

      Also on both the Original Onewheel Leaderboards RodneyCat of the United Kingdom suddenly appeared this week, and has climbed immediately up out of the basement level on both Leaderboards.

      Maksimmmmm of the Ukraine has made a move passing by www.onewheeltour.ch and is nipping at the heels of the number three spot -- which for the moment still belongs to me.

      On the Pint Leaderboard for mileage an interesting development is a seeming hole at the number five spot. But looking more closely it can be seen that the rider there has gone stealth simply using a punctuation period as his Leaderboard handle.

      The Pint Daystreak has two riders alternating for the number five position: Sometimes it is Flying Nimbus with a cloud logo, and other times it is Bigpoppa88. (On a side note I do have screenshot evidence of a tie for an unrelated position on a mileage leaderboard.)

      Exciting on the Plus mileage Leaderboard is the rider from France only two miles out from fourth place -- this transition will likely happen even before this post goes to press. The rider from France -- whose name I can't pronounce -- is also represented on the Plus Daystreak. Another rider, NJacobs has also moved up on the Plus mileage board this week.

      Noteworthy on the XR mileage Leaderboard are PASCH, the overall leader, and the elusive Johnny Bell, who both like their numbers and have let them stay for some days at: 14444 miles and 12000 miles respectively.

      Johnny Bell shows character. Today his handle advertises his XR for sale from the country of Maldives. In the recent past he has handled "social distancing" with nuclear power symbols on each end and from Antarctica, and TheCOVIDKid from God-knows-where. Other states (of mind) Johnny has claimed as his own have been Christmas Island, and the Virgin Islands.

      To stay in the swim of recent activity I click on the little clock icon near the top of the page.
      Active threads with many posts and views in the past year have been:
      "In the Wild, Photo Share..."
      "Watching Action on the Leaderboards"
      "Wintertime Photo Thread"
      And I think "Onewheel Cheap Mods" has technical promise as a long and interesting thread, especially if we expand 'cheap' to include all 'do-it-yourself' mods and experiments.

    • RE: Watching Action on the Leaderboards

      In the V1 Daystreak churn, 14 unique riders graced the chart this week -- and we also had a cool rider's reprise. In addition to the names on Lia's report above, five more riders came and went. Some are familiar names and some new:
      pizzaguy
      rickyrick54 which then changed to MM26
      @kevinharpertime
      clorentz
      and Stormflash.
      And then almost as soon as the week's tally was posted, davidteehee reappeared after having dropped off earlier -- making the same leaderboard twice in one week.
      This is certainly a most active daystreak board!

      And by the way, warm congratulations to HanahsDax for now holding two number one Leaderboard Daystreak positions simultaneously -- for the second time! Great work and dedication, David!

      Not in a day, this week though.

      Notable Onewheel achievements in my own eyes:
      -Matching mileage to serial number as posted above;
      -A 5000 mile daystreak in 280 days last year on my V1, averaging over 16 miles per day including through the several months of Northeast Ohio snowbelt winter.
      -And in a comment about how easy it is to learn to ride a Onewheel to a new prospective rider by another local rider, pointing to me "...see, ANYBODY can do it..."

      @Lia -- Sputtering out! This is the first I have ever seen a Onewheel rider on the Leaderboard with a single day's ride. Two and three day streaks are pathetic, too -- although it is kind of fun, almost just owning a V1 can give a person a claim to fame.

      Today I was riding over freezing rain glaze with a Soccasin with great traction.

      Geoff Oliver on the Onewheel Riders group on Facebook February 3 at 2:02 AM posted video of what looked like Onewheel cable chains. He wrote, "OneWheel XR Snow/Ice Chain using 3/32" wire rope. Works like a dream." Comments aplenty and much interest expressed in the group.
